Genre: Drama/Action/Adventure
Logline:
In this Depression-era drama, a poor and abused farm boy struggles to find his place in the world and dreams of being a cowboy. He was reduced to Hunger - Fear - alone - and with No Hope.
Synopsis:
Meet CHARLIE, 13, son of the kind-hearted but servile JOHN and his abusive wife MILDRED. Mildred frequently uses a bullwhip to discipline Charlie whom she feels was “born bad,” singling him out over his BROTHERS and SISTERS. Charlie’s only solace at home is the time he spends with his beloved dog Sport.
At school things are no better for Charlie. He’s unpopular, color blind and branded as stupid by his teachers. He’s also bullied by football jocks MAC and BUTCH, but when he fights back the blame is placed on him and he is branded a troublemaker, for which he is again punished at home by Mildred.
This cycle of violence and hard knocks seems inescapable for Charlie, who dreams of one day becoming a cowboy. Meanwhile he fixates on DAISY, sister of his only friend BENNY.
At home Mildred takes in a boarder, a prostitute named MISS SHEILA who takes a liking to Charlie, seeing in him a kindred spirit. Charlie also gets up the nerve to ask Daisy to the school dance and she accepts. Without Mildred’s knowledge Charlie seeks out his father who, in a moment of respite for Charlie, clandestinely lends him the money for a corsage and locket for Daisy.
In exchange for the money Charlie must help his brother FRANK and their father relocate their outhouse, a disagreeable but necessary chore. During the operation Frank and Charlie horse around and Charlie falls into the pit, covering himself in crap. When Mildred quite literally gets wind of it she punishes Charlie by giving away his dog Sport, a fate more painful to Charlie than one of her brutal whippings. On the night of the big dance Charlie sneaks out and has the time of his life with Daisy, ending up in their first kiss. He sneaks back home undetected all but for the mud which Mildred spots on Charlie’s boots the next morning. When Mildred goes to whip Charlie, Miss Sheila intercedes, resulting in a family row in which Charlie finally stands up to Mildred, Mildred kicks Miss Sheila out, and Charlie leaves with her, finally running away from home.
He and Miss Sheila part ways and Charlie rides the rails into a volatile, unknown future. He soon meets up with JESSE, a child hobo like himself. Jesse is an African-American. The two team up to help each other survive as runaways. Charlie’s ready for adventure but has no idea of the hard knocks that lie ahead… Charlie and Jesse meet up with a group of older hobo’s of the rails. They have many life-threatening adventures together, and from them he learns loyalty, survival, and resourcefulness.
Charlie; is left for dead from a beating by the Railroad Bull’s. A cowboy named Jake takes Charlie to his home so he can heal up. Jake and Hope take Charles in as one of their own. His new friend is a cowboy and brings Charles into his fantasy world of horses, rodeos, and honest wholesome living.
After saying a tearful goodbye to the only real family Charlie had, Jake and his wife Hope. Charlie joined the Government-sponsored “CCC Camp”, (Civilian Conservation Camp). This is where Charlie’s life began to turn in another direction.
